Did You Know that Crime is Increasing in New York City?
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-(D-NY) Cortez's district experienced a 57% increase in major crime during her tenure. Why is this important to understand?
Well, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has advocated for less policing across the country. She even blasted then-New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's proposed $1 billion cut to the police department's budget in 2020 as insufficient.
In June 2020, the congresswoman stated, "These proposed 'cuts' to the NYPD budget are a deceptive illusion." "This is not a triumph. The fight to defund law enforcement continues."
Massive Crime Increases in Seven Areas
Ocasio-Cortez's 14th Congressional District, representing more than 650,000 people in the boroughs of the Bronx and Queens, has experienced a steady rise in crime over the last two years. The district has experienced a 44% increase in crimes reported so far in 2022, compared to the same time frame last year, and an even more considerable increase of 57%, compared to 2020, according to police statistics.
According to a study conducted by former NYPD inspector Paul Mauro, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's district experienced massive increases in the seven "major" crimes identified by the NYPD: murder, rape, robbery, felonious assault, burglary, grand theft, and grand larceny auto. According to the study, shootings increased by 47.05%.
The former inspector dismissed anticipated criticism that the end of coronavirus lockdowns was to blame for the increase, claiming that crime rates had been rising while the lockdowns were in effect. He linked the drastic increase to a $1.5 billion cut in NYPD funding in 2020, which Ocasio-Cortez spearheaded and lamented wasn't enough.
Defund the Police?
With this in mind, however, some New Yorkers are questioning the platform of defunding the police. Some constituents in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's district told Fox News on August 12, 2022, that they oppose defunding the police, especially since crime in the community continues to rise.
"I don't think it's a good idea to defund the police," one local, Daniel, said. "I think we need more police in the area."
Another man, Tom, told Fox News that Democrats' calls to defund the police were "absurd."
"It's completely ridiculous," Tom said.
Paul, a former military policeman who resides in Ocasio-Cortez's district, told Fox News: "My father always said, if you're afraid of the police, you're doing something wrong."
But another local, Zion, told Fox News Report that "there needs to be better oversight of police, regardless of their budget…I wouldn't say defund the police, but I would say force accountability,"
He went on to say, "They do a good job. There are some who are great," Zion said. "But then there are others who are like they came from the pits of hell."
"The more and more time goes on, and you see these crimes go up in the city, especially around this area, it's gotten a lot worse," one New Yorker named Max told Fox News. He said defunding the police isn't working.
After a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd in 2020, the defunding of the cops' movement gained traction. Following widespread anti-cop protests, several major US cities, including New York, Austin, Seattle, and Washington, D.C., reduced their police budgets.
"At the time, a lot of people thought that it was an efficient solution to a problem," Max said.
Paul told Fox News: "When you see a police officer, you respect them. They're protecting you." “So, no, you can't defund the police," Paul said.
